The annual presentation of the Madden Medal by the AFL Players’ Association seeks to recognise the contribution that AFL Players’ make to the game both on and off the field. At the completion of the 2011 season the Players’ Association will again seek to honour those who are hanging up the boots and retiring from our great game.

The Madden Medal is voted on by the Players Association’s board and delegate members as they assess all retired players based on their on and off-field achievements.  The areas for assessment are Community Spirit, Personal Development, Football Achievement.  The individual who has been deemed to have been outstanding within all of these areas will be named with Madden Medallist. Previous Madden Medal recipients include Brett Kirk, Michael O'Loughlin, Robert Harvey and Glenn Archer.

In 2011 the Madden Medal will be used as a celebration with all of the Players’ Associations Past Player Alumni Members and in recognition of this momentous occasion the event will also honour a year of football history.  This year’s theme will be football in the 1970’s.

The 1970s represented a period of great change in the game in which a number of new approaches were taken and the status quo was challenged.  Most importantly, the 1970s saw the creation of the Players’ Association in its current form at the behest of players, for players.

This year the event will be at cocktail reception held at Studio 3 at Crown– Melbourne on Thursday 1st December 2011 and will encompass everything that was great about football in 70s; the food,  the fashion, major moments and great players from this era.

When: 1st December 2011

Where: Studio 3 at Crown Casino in Melbourne.
