When we first become an AFL player it can be pretty daunting as often we move away from our families to live our dream of being an AFL footballer.
It is an exciting time of change as we meet new people and see what it is like to play footy at the elite level, but during this time we are also faced with many new challenges.
We know that to be an elite player you must train incredibly hard to ensure you are at your peak physical fitness and health.
But what our Wellbeing Services Manager Matti Clements (above) also teaches us is that mental health and wellbeing is just as important and that is why our Association offers a large range of services in this area to ensure we have the support needed to deal with the challenges an elite athlete faces,
When we first join the system we learn techniques which help us cope with stress, problem solving and life management skills which help us build individual resilience skills to cope with the demands of life as an AFL player.
Our Association also provides us with a national network of Wellbeing consultants who have expertise in dealing with the stress that can be caused by injury rehabilitation, transition and relocation.
Some of the other services they offer are personal counselling, wellbeing education and initiatives, sleep seminars and access to industry education and support.
