Matthew Finnis

Matthew Finnis
Chief Executive Officer

Matt was appointed Chief Executive Officer of the AFL Players’ Association in September 2009 after previously holding the positions of General Manager – Operations and, prior to that, Manager – Player Relations.

During his time at the PA Matt has driven an agenda which resulted in the agreement to introduce free agency to the AFL. He has also represented player interests in a range of issues, including commercial rights and individual grievances, and chaired the AFLPA Agent Accreditation Board.

He recently played a central role in negotiating with the AFL to secure recognition for the significant part AFL footballers play in the phenomenal and growing success of the code.

Prior to joining the PA Matt worked as a commercial lawyer advising numerous sporting organisations, businesses, athletes and government.

Matt is currently chairman of Ladder – an AFL Players charitable initiative to tackle youth homelessness and a director of AFL SportsReady – the AFL industry’s group training company. He is also a director of Surfing Australia – the peak governing body for the sport of surfing, and has been a director and company secretary of Surf Life Saving Victoria since 2002. Matt was also a founding director of HeartKids Australia, a charity supporting children born with congenital heart disease.

Joanne Rafferty

Joanne Rafferty
Business Manager & Executive Assistant

Originally from the North East of England, Jo and her husband Paul have been in Australia for some 20 years, however it’s fair to say that it’s only since joining the AFL Players’ Association that she has gained any understanding of the rules of footy.  She is however passionate about working with the management team to ensure that all members, both past and present, optimise the benefits that are due to them as key stakeholders of the game.

With two teenage daughters, she is well practiced in looking after others, keeping things calm, while trying to juggle 10,000 things at the same time.  These skills are constantly in use as she provides support to the CEO and Board while ensuring the efficient running of the general office.

With a background in project management and business analysis, Jo is driven by goals and always has a plan in place to make sure she achieves them.  She is at her happiest when the team around her are clear on where they are going and are implementing a plan to get there.

Jo is usually the first into the office each day, where she is able to get her day organised before heading out for a run or a swim as part of her training program to complete the London Triathlon in 2013.

Amanda Crowe
Administration Assistant and Receptionist

Amanda has just recently joined the team at the AFL Players’ Association.  She is a mad Geelong Supporter much to her Father’s displeasure.  Amanda’s blood lines run Yellow and Black, with her Father being, Neville Crowe, ex Player, Captain and President of the Richmond Football Club.  But her Mum got her way at a young age, so as Amanda says “Once you start following a team you can’t change”.

Being the first point of contact for the AFL Players’ Association means a lot to Amanda.  She is very passionate with her footy and loves working in an environment that is dedicated to the players of this great game.

In her spare time Amanda loves to spend time with her two gorgeous nieces and loves quality time with family and friends.  She can also be spotted at MSAC doing her best trying to keep in shape and at Chaddy spending all her money!

Ian Prendergast

Ian Prendergast
General Manager - Player Relations

Prenda, as he prefers to be called, is our General Manager of Player Relations.  Prenda grew up in Kerang, a small town in North-West Victoria, and maintains his country drawl which he seems quite proud of (strangely enough).

He moved to the big smoke (Melbourne) with his family and decided to complete his law degree at Monash Uni during his 65 game “career” for Carlton from 1999 – 2006.

Prenda describes himself as a “journeyman” player, albeit at the one club, experiencing the good and bad times throughout this chequered period of Carlton’s history.  He maintains that the best thing he did during his time at the Blues was completing his degree before getting the flick!

Being a lawyer has come in handy as Prenda acts as an advocate for players, seeking to maintain and improve the terms and conditions of AFL players’ employment.  He also oversees the accreditation and regulation of our agents together with providing advice and guidance for players and agents in relation to a wide range of player issues.

When he finished up at Carlton, Prenda moved to “Radelaide” for two years and worked at Griffin Hilditch Lawyers whilst galloping about for the South Adelaide Panthers in the SANFL.  Let’s just say the Panther’s roar they played over the PA after each goal at home games didn’t get much of a run (Grrrrrr)!  After working for a year back in Melbourne for Kelly Hazell Quill Lawyers in predominantly Media Law, Prenda followed his passion to the Players’ Association at the end of 2009 in his current role supporting players.

After completing a Master of Sports Business in 2007, Braden has held roles with the Sandringham Football Club (VFL) and Rowing Victoria.  Away from the Assocation he is a keen cyclist and a student of all sports.

John Hogan

John Hogan
General Manager - Finance & Administration

John joined the PA in April 2001 as the General Manager, Finance & Administration; he is our longest serving employee having just chalked up his 10th year with the Association. John is responsible for Corporate & Taxation compliance issues, preparation of the Annual Report & Budgets, all Finance & Treasury related matters, maintaining the Players’ Retirement Account and administration of the AFL Players’ Superannuation Fund. Together with his trusty sidekick Coz (Cory McGrath) they ensure all players receive their benefit payments from Licensing & Marketing, Education & Computer Grants and Player Retirement Payments on time and into the players’ bank account.

John is a Certified Practising Accountant and has been a member of the Australian Society of Accountants for over 30 years. His experience ranges from commencing in a Chartered Accountants Office to spending 18 years working for the Channel Seven Network both in Melbourne & Brisbane. He subscribes to Oscar Wilde’s definition of Accountants, “Those that know the cost of everything but the value of nothing”, a bit harsh, but when it comes to spending the players money John will ensure it is not wasted.

On the home front, although his youngest is now in his second year at Uni, John still feels at times like the taxi driver running around after eight offspring.  If he is not in the car he is a slave to the garden out on his acre property in Templestowe (Melbourne’s north – east). Although just being too old to compete in the Tour de France John is a keen weekend bike rider tearing up the Victorian bicycle tracks as long as there is a ‘cold frothy’ at the end of the hard ride.

With ten down I’m sure John is looking forward to the next ten years with great anticipation.

A memory like an elephant, he still owes Leanne a good prank!!

When Cory is not at work, he enjoys spending time with his wife and playing with his two children. Cory also plays football with Port Melbourne FC where he suffers from ‘white line fever’; something he temporarily cured in 2010 when he retired but it came back again in 2011 when he announced his comeback.

Having completed a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Commerce in 2009, Francee has worked in the Membership Department at Melbourne Storm where she looked after everything membership – the program, the servicing, the members – but don’t worry, she’s an AFL girl at heart.  Francee loves her shoes (she’s a bit of an Imelda Marcos) and her chocolate and just about anything to do with fashion.  Always the extrovert, Francee is always up for a good laugh…except if there’s a worm on the ground; she’s terrified of worms.

Steve Alessio
Manager - Alumni and Corporate Programs

Steve or Big SES (as he is affectionately known around the traps) has been a part of the team for nearly five years. He oversees all things Player Development including induction and exit support programs, education and vocation programs, wellbeing services, indigenous and multicultural services and providing support and professional development opportunities to all AFL club Player Development Managers. He has also enjoyed reinvigorating the services provided to all past player members with the introduction of the AFL Players’ ALUMNI network.

Combining studies and work in the areas of business and IT and his AFL experience as a player, have led SES down the path of program development and support services for all past and present AFL Players. It is an area he always had a passion for even when he was playing by mentoring a lot of the younger Essendon players throughout their careers.

A northern suburbs boy, he enjoys having a laugh in the office and will often be seen (or heard) getting a few staff together for a few old (not so funny) footy stories or jokes at his expense.

Brett Johnson

Brett Johnson
General Manager - Player Development

Brett has been at the AFL Players’ Association since March 2010. The West Australian fleet-footed midfielder (not really – Usain Bolt is not losing any sleep) played 70 AFL games at Hawthorn/Carlton, and over 175 games of VFL Football, mainly for the mighty Williamstown Seagulls. Brett is a qualified Physiotherapist (hence the nickname ‘Fizz’) and worked in this industry for 2 years before deciding he would like to get back to working with AFL Footballers and assisting them transition successfully into and out of football.

Previously Brett worked in the Player Development Department as Player Development Regional Manager working closely with six clubs– Carlton, Geelong, Hawthorn, Richmond, St Kilda, and Western Bulldogs. Brett is now General Manager - Player Development and is responsible for managing the Player Development Program which provides opportunities for players to enhance their education & training, personal development, and wellbeing, and career transition into and out of AFL Football.

Brett loves all things sport and country music... No need to worry though, Slim Dusty is not on his playlist but Keith Urban does get a good run though.

John Hinge
Player Development Regional Manager

John is the newest member of our Player Development Team and joined the ranks in July 2011. John spent his junior years growing up in the country, a small town, Mundulla. Located halfway between Adelaide and Melbourne it’s a great little hide away for a great meal and a quiet beer with the locals. Feel free to pop in on your next road trip! However be careful as on arrival as you may double the population...

Playing a number of sports as a youngster John settled on Football and found himself playing for the Adelaide Crows. Three years was spent with Adelaide and he managed 1 AFL  game, playing against Collingwood. John is currently playing for the Sturt Football Club in the SANFL.

After completing his career with Adelaide, John has been studying and working with Youth at Risk. For the previous few years john has been working for Centacare in a program that supported youth who were at risk from disengaging from education and in danger of homelessness. Time spent finding accommodation and ways to support the young people was challenging but extremely rewarding.

John is unique to the players association (excluding his abnormal white hair ) to the fact that he is based in Adelaide. John works out of the SportsReady office in Adelaide and looks after our western teams including West Coast, Fremantle, Adelaide, Port Power, Essendon and Collingwood. John is responsible for all aspects of Career Transition for his clubs and coordinates programs such as Literacy & Numeracy, Football Apprenticeship, Next Goal Work Placements, Sporting Trade Skills, Workshops, Next Coach.

In his spare time you will find John at the beach, on the golf course or travelling back home to the farm to catch family and friends.

She managers the Psychology Consultants that players can access confidentially for welfare related issues, develops and delivers wellbeing programs, oversees research projects and works with players to engage in social leadership initiatives.

Unlike most the staff at AFLPA, Matti doesn't follow a club but loves the game as much as the best of them.

Claire Mitchell-Taverner

Claire Mitchell-Taverner
Player Development Regional Manager

Claire, or CMT, Bear, or Auntie Claire as she’s known around the office, joined the Player Development team in December 2007 as the Career Development Manager at the PA.  Now in the East Coast Regional Manager role, she spends a fair bit of time out of the office which works well for everyone!  On any given day, she could be working with one or more of her six Clubs (Brisbane, Gold Coast, Swannies, GWS, Melbourne or North Melbourne), either with the PDM at the Club or on the phone, or working with players or past players on their off-field endeavours, ideas and interests.  Basically, anything ‘Transition’ is on the menu.  One of her biggest PA passions is the Literacy & Numeracy Program which she has been driving since 2007.

If ever there’s a quiet moment in the office you’ll no doubt hear her bragging about her own sporting success, usually about that Olympic Gold Medal from the Sydney Games etc and her (not so) massive royalty cheques compared with the past AFL players in the PDP team …but we put up with that as her experience as an athlete brings a really useful perspective; she finds those experiences of juggling sporting ambition with the push and pull of life, a huge benefit for her work with our players.

CMT has always worked in and around sport (more in the media & PR game early on) and loves her deliberate move to the athlete development side of things.  She’s completed a Bachelor of Arts, a Grad. Dip in Marketing, a Cert IV in Personal & Business Coaching and is completing the Grad. Cert. in Elite Athlete Mentoring...but it’s her work on the ground (and away from the books) helping athletes make the most of their opportunities that she really enjoys.  If you want to get the best out of CMT, keep her well-fed.  Yes, she’s a massive ‘foodie’, even by AFLPA standards…and that’s saying something!

Nadia completed a Bachelor of Business (Sport and Leisure Management) in 2006 and completed a work placement with Player Development Department at the Players’ Association in her final year of study. Nadia has also completed a Diploma of Sport & Recreation and started her work in the sport industry working in administration for a small Sports Marketing and Events Company, working in the areas of corporate hospitality, event management and sponsorship and marketing. Nadia was born in Malaysia and lived there until she was four.

She attributes her love for sport to the time in her life when she would often stay up late into the middle of the night with her Dad to watch anything sport on TV.
