What is the ‘Next Goal’ Program?

The ‘Next Goal” Program is an important part of the AFL Players’ Association’s Player Development Program and has been developed in conjunction with AFL SportsReady.
The program has been implemented to provide opportunities and support for AFLPA members looking for practical work experience. It aims to enhance the post-football employment prospects of suitably qualified and/or career oriented current and recently retired AFL Players.
How does it work?
The ’Next Goal’ Program is designed to be flexible enough to accommodate the needs of footballers. The number and frequency of hours worked each week are structured in accordance with a player’s football obligations and the availability of the employer. Players are aligned with employers in an industry, field or discipline suiting the player’s requirements, interests and previous experience or qualifications. The employer must be willing to provide meaningful work experience, mentoring and training to the player.
What are the expectations?
There are two slightly different programs; 30 days (240 hours) or 10 days (80 hours). The Next Goal 30 day placements are designed for players with a clear career path in mind. Often these players will have been studying in the area or have done some work in the field. Next Goal 10 day placements are for players who want to try a new industry without any long term commitment. In several cases 10 day placements have been extended because of the benefits to the participants.
While in training, players at AFL clubs will typically be available for one day per week, for their work experience placement. During the off-season some players may arrange to do their placement in a more full-time capacity. Participants are expected to be in close contact with their employer; especially when they are unable to make it into work. They are also expected to submit monthly time sheets to AFL SportsReady and undertake a review of the program once completed.
There is a small monetary payment on completion of the Next Goal Program.
