AFLPA introduce Standard Agent Agreement

As the body representing the collective professional interests of AFL Players, the AFL Players' Association has an obligation to ensure that competent and ethical individuals represent its members.
One way of achieving this is via an accreditation process for all people wishing to become an AFL player agent.
Since 2001, the AFLPA has managed a compulsory accreditation process for AFL player agents, which has seen prospective AFL player agents required to fulfil a number of criteria, such as holding personal indemnity insurance and a current police check, as well successfully completing an exam which deals with the range of collective industrial instruments applying to AFL players, before receiving accreditation.
The recent introduction by the AFL Players’ Association of a Standard Representation Agreement for AFLPA accredited agents to use when contracting AFL players means today’s current and prospective AFL players are more likely than ever to receive the best advice and support from their agent.
AFLPA accredited agents, prospective and current AFL players and parents all now have the security of a legal document, endorsed by the AFLPA.
The Standard Representation Agreement also helps ensures transparency between parties and limits any confusion for current and prospective AFL players.
Current contractual arrangements between accredited agents and players are not interfered with by the introduction of the Standard Agreement. However, accredited agents should not renew or extend the term of an existing representation agreement after 1 March 2008. Agents and players should instead use the new Standard Representation Agreement to preside over their contractual relationship.
The Standard Representation Agreement was approved by the AFLPA Agent Accreditation Board and subsequently adopted by the AFLPA Executive Committee after 12 months of extensive consultation.
